Triple J Hottest 100 Social Media Analysis

The Triple J Hottest 100 is one of the world’s largest community rated annual music charts.

Last year (2013) a group from Brisbane put together the Warmest 100, a social media analysis of votes in the Hottest 100 with an eye towards predicting the outcome.  The analysis was highly accurate, picking 92 of the top 100 songs.

In 2014, Triple J tried to put an end to social media analysis by modifying the way in which votes are tallied.  However, using sentiment analysis and some hashtag tracking through a tool that I’m just finalising development for, I’ve been able to pull some pretty quick insights into the 2014 results.

Without further ado, the top 3 from Triple J’s Hottest 100 for 2014:

#3 – Arctic Monkeys – Do I Wanna Know?
#2 – Daft Punk – Get Lucky
#1 – Lorde – Royals

Please keep in mind this is a small data sample (~3% total votes) and the spread between 2 & 3 is quite close.  If you’re quick, put down a box trifecta with your local bookie selecting those three and you’re sure to see a payout.
